Award-winning musical with ties to the Central Valley

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — It's arguably the hottest ticket on Broadway.

The now four-time Tony Award-winning musical “The Outsiders” is based on the novel by SE Hinton and the film by Francis Ford Coppola.

Fresh off their trip to New York to see the show, two of the women were credited with making the film in the first place.

“Jo Ellen said it took many miracles for this story to happen 40 years ago,” says Lone Star alumna Michelle Ogawa. “It took a lot of miracles for us to get to New York. »

Days before taking home the material, including “Best Musical,” the cast of The Outsiders met with Jo Ellen Misakian and her Lone Star family.

In the 1980s, Jo Ellen was a library technician trying to inspire students at Lone Star in Sanger to get excited about reading.

Just over 100 students, including Ogawa, signed a petition asking Coppola to adapt the book into a film.

“You're talking about a small K-8 in a farming community,” Ogawa said.

“I put a paperback book in it, with the petition, a letter and sent it to Coppola in New York,” Misakian said.

After some suggestions to ensure that the film remained faithful to the pages of the novel “The Outsiders”, it would become a box office success, launching the careers of stars like Patrick Swayze and Matt Dillon.

Fast forward to 2024, the musical is wowing audiences on Broadway.

“There were tears, laughter, emotion throughout this story,” Ogawa said. “No matter the age, everyone was there. »

“It was absolutely stunning,” Misakian said. “We couldn’t have asked for a better game.”

In addition to her Lone Star family, Jo Ellen also shared the experience with her granddaughter and niece, who are now the same age as her former students when the film was released.

“We were so impressed over 40 years ago when all these unknown actors came to our school, and we were just in awe of them,” Ogawa said.

Michelle organized the trip to New York with other Lone Star alumni, which exceeded our expectations.

“We might as well have been middle schoolers in Lone Star,” she said. “It’s just a bond that’s kept us close and connected.”

The producers of the show, as well as the student ambassadors, had a surprise in store for the Lone Star group.

“They told me to stay there because the casting was coming,” Misakian said.

The musical production stars stayed until lights out at the theater, inquiring about the students' efforts to bring “The Outsiders” to the big screen.

The book's author, SE Hinton, is from Oklahoma, so the tour will begin in Tulsa in 2025. Lone Star is already planning a trip for that.
