Kevin Spacey's comeback director says only a small minority in Hollywood thinks the actor should quit

The director of Kevin Spacey's first American film since his career was derailed by sexual assault allegations said he was keenly aware that the actor's choice would be reluctant.

Talk to The independentfilmmaker Michael Zaiko Hall said he was thinking of casting Spacey in his indie thriller Peter five eight was a transgressive act.

Some people, who I would say are a pretty small minority in the industry, but some people don't think he should be working, Hall said.

It's a kind of transgressive act to choose it, in a sense. I have to say though, I don't think there are enough subversive and transgressive acts in cinema. So for me, it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Spacey, 64, was acquitted last year of a number of alleged sexual offenses by four men in the UK, allegedly taking place between 2001 and 2013.

Each of Spacey's accusers testified at trial, describing him as a vile, slippery and atrocious, despicable sexual predator, [and] disgusting.

In response, the two-time Oscar winner called the allegations against him crazy and a stab in the back. The jury acquitted Spacey of all charges.

Peter five eight Jet Jandreau stars as a real estate agent in a small mountain community who turns out to be a troubled alcoholic with a dark secret. Spacey plays the charismatic stranger Peter who unexpectedly appears at the behest of his mysterious boss. Rebecca De Mornay (Risky business ) also stars.

Hall said Spacey was a natural fit for the role. The character of Peter in Peter Five Eight is very typical of Kevin. There's a certain comedic malevolence to the character, and a musicality to the character that I don't think anyone else can play as well as Kevin.

The director added that he and the producers looked into the allegations against Spacey and concluded that they had been exaggerated.

“I like to think of myself as an ethical person, and I don't think we would have done that if we really thought this person was as bad as his critics said, especially at the time,” Hall said.

Since then, Kevin has won cases on two continents and I think the narrative is changing. I think people are realizing that he's not really who some people would like to portray him as.

Shortly after the film's release, Channel 4's documentary Spacey unmasked released new allegations about the american beauty star.

“My opinion on this documentary is that I think they are accomplishing a goal,” Hall said. “I think they are achieving a goal that they hope to achieve. »

We have people on camera talking about their experiences with Kevin, and we learned years later that they exchanged emails with Kevin in a very friendly manner. So, to me, that doesn't account for those people. I don't think this should be shown on Channel Four or HBO. I think it's too fragile. I really think it's too fragile.

When I talk about it with people, I see the whole range of reactions to Kevin. The vast majority have had enough of these allegations and prefer to see the man practicing his art. This is the camp I find myself in. If there is anything of the severity of Harvey Weinstein or Bill Cosby, I think they should be in jail. This gravity does not exist here.

To me it's almost a little puritanical in the sense that Kevin is a great artist and at the height of his success and his art he led a sexual life. When did our society become so puritanical that we judge that? It seems a little strange to me.
