Luke Bryan rocks Pine Knob on first night of Hoedown – The Oakland Press
Playing in front of a crowd of over 14,000 people is not generally considered a “small” gig.
But by Luke Bryan standards, his headlining 95.5 WYCD Hoedown show on Friday night, June 29, at Pine Knob Music Theater – the first of the venue's only two concerts this season – was positively intimate.
The country star and American Idol judge last performed at the amphitheater 12 years ago; he has since played four shows at Ford Field, co-headlined the Faster Horses Festival in Brooklyn, Michigan, and brought his Farm Tours to venues in Fowlerville and Allegan.
But even though the venue was smaller, Bryant didn't scale back his performance at all, delivering an hour and 45 minutes of country girl (and boy) shows loaded with pyrotechnics and laser effects – right from the start, with all the fireworks during the opening track “That's My Kind of Night”. His showmanship was stadium-sized, even singing to the heavens (or at least to the upper deck) during certain moments of the 22-song set, as he stood at the end of a short ramp protruding from the stage.
He also showed some resilience, as though he clearly struggled vocally and frequently coughed during and after songs. Bryant referenced a strenuous round of golf earlier in the day at the Oakland Hills Country Club, saying, “You build all your damn golf courses way too hard here…I had to take an ice bath after that.” » There were times during the evening when he tried harder than others, but Bryan – wearing a blue plaid shirt, jeans and an often backward baseball cap – made up for it with his crowd-pleasing temperament and 1,000-watt smile, as well as the precise playing of his six-member band.
Four years after his last album, Bryan didn’t have much to promote, aside from a couple of recent singles—last year’s “But I Got a Beer in My Hand” and the new “Love You, Miss You, Mean It,” both of which he performed. That allowed the show to be a greatest-hits exercise, filled with country hits like “Rain Is a Good Thing,” “Drunk On You,” “Roller Coaster,” “Kick the Dust Up,” “Weather-Friendly,” “Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day,” “Move” and more, as well as oldies like “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye.” He added a verse and chorus of Kenny Chensey’s “When the Sun Goes Down” to the end of his own “One Margarita,” and for a rendition of “This is How We Roll,” he brought out Huntergirl, Chase Matthews and Alana to open the main stage. Springsteen returns for a raucous romp through the hit Florida Georgia Line.
The highlight of the night, however, was a moving solo segment that transcended Bryan’s vocal woes. After sitting down at the piano to lead performances of “Do I” (which he began with a snippet of Journey’s “Faithfully”) and “Buy Dirt,” Bryan played “Most People Are Good,” “Country On,” and Toby Keith’s “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)” alone with a guitar before returning to the piano for a moving rendition of “Drink a Beer,” which he dedicated to Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy Brad Reckling and his family. (Matthew did something similar during his first set.)
Bryan lifted the mood after that, eventually speaking for the majority of the crowd by singing “I Don't Want This Night to End” and belting out “Country Girl (Shake it For Me),” making Pine Knob shake as much as any other venue he's played in the past dozen years.
The 99.5 WYCD Hoedown will be held again at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, with Bryan joined again by Huntergirl and Matthew as well as Ella Langley at Pine Knob, 33 Bob Seger Drive, Independent Township.
