LASD unable to supply new officers to contract cities like West Hollywood
At an adjourned regular meeting of the West Hollywood City Council on Monday, June 24, 2024, West Hollywood Mayor John Erickson and City Manager David Wilson revealed that Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) is currently understaffed and is unable to provide the City of West Hollywood with new recruits, as LAST is trying to increase its staff if the city decides to add more deputies.
Mayor Erickson asked Director Wilson to clarify that the council is currently unable to hire 10 additional deputies, even if it wanted to, because the LASD does not have any to assign to the city.
Director Wilson agreed.
It is important to continue to invest in community safety when it becomes available, Mayor Erickson said. And the technological elements will be useful. But understanding the budgeting process and how we even contract for services is really critical. I understand that some in the community want more, some less, whatever, but even if we all said yes, let's get more now, we couldn't even get that, could we?
Director Wilson agreed and stated that LASD is not currently on a hiring freeze, but based on the county's current position, LASD is not providing new deputies to any city while they continue to try to fill the positions they currently have.
Wilson added that they also do not offer non-sworn positions and that providing a city staff liaison would not have access to the West Hollywood Sheriff's Station in the same way that sworn officers do. have access to it. He said a non-sworn officer would not meet the needs the city of West Hollywood is seeking. However, he told Mayor Erickson that he would look into the matter.

Captain Moulder added that the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved eight Sheriffs Academy classes for this year, with two more as needed. Once the Sheriff's Department increases its staffing levels, it will then be able to respond to any requests from contract cities to increase staffing in contracts, he said.
