It was a pleasure to be a speaker at the Gibraltar International Literary Festival, talking about my middle-grade Bollywood fiction series. And here is an interview that appeared in the Gibraltar Chronicle. Puneet Bhandal on increasing diversity in the publishing industry The glitzy, glamorous world of the Bollywood film industry was brought to life at the Gibraltar International Literary Festival, captured in two middle-grade novels written by Puneet Bhandal. Bollywood (a pun on Hollywood), the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai, India, is the largest film industry in the world. With an estimated cinema audience of 2.2 billion people a year, Bollywood films are popular with audiences around the world. A former Bollywood industry journalist for the UK’s Eastern Eye newspaper, Ms Bhandal described her experience of working with the stars. Inspired by that era, she based the series Bollywood Academy on children attending a performing arts school with the aim of making it big in the industry. In her book Starlet Rivals, she follows the story of Bela, who finds herself pitted against Monica, the daughter of established stars, in a storyline based on nepotism within the film industry. Melody Queen follows the story of Simi who dreams of breaking into the male-dominated world of music production within the industry. Ms Bhandal explained that these stories have been 15 years in the making, but it was during the Covid-19 lockdown that she was able to put pen to paper and really focus on writing the story. She identified a gap in the market for young Asian readers, and the books came at the right time, when the right publisher was willing to take a chance on her vision, at a time when there is a push for more diversity in the publishing industry. As for her next book, Ms Bhandal is currently working on a historical fiction novel. I am really enjoying writing it and have learned so much in the process. » When it comes to her role as a published author, Ms Bhandal said it is truly a labour of love and something a writer really wants to do. by Dr Jennifer Ballantine, Ms Bhandal told the audience she listens to podcasts and does research for the novel, and has developed her own writing process by setting herself a daily deadline. She writes 1,000 words a day late at night after her children have gone to bed, adding: I have to do it myself. As well as working as a journalist in Bollywood, Ms Bhandal has also branched out as a clothing designer, creating clothes for the Miss England pageant.
