Renauld White, Black Model and Leading Actor, Dies at 80
Renauld White, who starred for two years on the soap opera The Guiding Light and broke racial barriers by becoming the second black model to appear on the cover of GQ, died on June 26. He was in palliative care at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. White was 80 years old.
White-friendly fashion designer Jeffrey Banks shared the news with Women's Everyday Clothing. More information about White's cause of death was not immediately available.
In November 1979, White became the second black model to appear on the cover of GQ, following Urs Althaus in 1977. White worked with designer Bill Blass in 1969 and walked for Calvin Klein, Donna Karan and Ralph Lauren.
Banks told WWD that White was a trailblazer. There were very few black models at the time. He really broke barriers. When they threw a party for him in Newark for his 50th anniversary in the fashion industry, he was very proud of the progress he had made and how he opened doors for other people.
The pair were first shown in 1971 at a fitting for Ralph Lauren, where Banks worked.
In a interview with The Morning Call In 1987, White explained that his love for fashion was inspired by his father. “I actually inherited my sense of clothes from my father. He has always been an elegant man and dresses tastefully. He’s a truck driver who has a taste for the finer things in life,” White said.
Modeling was not the only vocation for white people. When he wasn't shooting covers or walking runways, he was appearing in films (he had a role in The Stepford Wives) and off-Broadway productions. He took a break from modeling in 1985 after landing the role of William in The Guiding Light.
“I have to admit that I was nervous going into the screenings here at the MFA, having missed the last two years due to my acting commitment on The Guiding Light,” he said. In fact, I had to ask to no longer appear on the show for the week in order to attend this week's screenings. Coming back after two years, I was a bit out of step for a while.
Renauld White was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, and attended Rutgers University. He began modeling after being signed by Zoli Modeling Agency. White's funeral will be held July 12 at 11 a.m. at Whigham Funeral Home in Newark.
