Will George Strait become a star in Hollywood, alongside Keith Urban?!?
Last week, it was announced that George Strait would be one of 15 recipients in the Class of 2025 to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. For those unaware, this is where celebrities from all walks of life get a star and (often) their handprints on a sidewalk in Hollywood, cementing their legacy, so to speak. While television and film are where the Hollywood Walk is most centered, many musicians also have stars, most notably Hank Williams. Strait has a few acting credits, including the 1992 film Pure country.
Not that “King” George needs the accolade to in any way justify his contribution to American culture, but it's nice to see and will be one of the many resume points Strait has accumulated over the years. Stars must submit an application to be considered, but otherwise the criteria are, “Professional success, longevity in the category of five years or more, contributions to the community, and a guarantee that the celebrity will attend the inauguration ceremony if selected.” »
Other musicians inducted this year include Prince, The B-52s, Green Day, The Isley Brothers, WAR, Depeche Mode, Busta Rhymes and… Keith Urban? Sure, maybe Urban is enough of a “star” in someone's world to get recognition on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at some point. But pairing such powerhouse musicians as Strait, Prince and The Isley Brothers with Urban, who has done nothing but shapeshift and sell out to stay relevant in recent years, seems like a reduction in honor for the other greats music.
If you want Keith Urban on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, wait a year After Strait gets his or something. The organizers of this party make it seem like Strait and Urban are equals. This devalues the whole thing a little. The last big thing Urban did was wear a Sturgill Simpson t-shirt American Idol.
Other country stars who have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame include Gene Autry, who actually has five for his contributions to various disciplines. Dolly Parton has two for the same reason. Roy Acuff got his star in 1960. Garth Brooks, Clint Black and Brooks & Dunn all got stars. Alabama, Eddy Arnold, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and John Denver have also earned Hollywood stars. Willie Nelson doesn't have one, but remember you have to submit an application to be recognized, so it's not necessarily his fault.
Somehow, Rascal Flatts got a Hollywood star in 2012. Today, Rascal Flatts is gone and is somewhat of a laughing stock in the country. This is one of the reasons why perhaps the committee should be more selective.
Of course, there's probably a lot of behind-the-scenes politics involved in determining who gets selected. Given that Keith Urban's wife Nicole Kidman is on the Walk of Fame and is a Hollywood heavyweight, that probably helped. Stars also have to pay a whopping $40,000 if they're selected to help maintain the Hollywood Walk, etc.
