Actress Sarah Goninon wins award with Back to Back Theatre Company at Venice Biennale

When actress Sarah Goninon told her disability service provider that she wanted to become a professional actress, their reaction was something like, “Yeah, but what do you really want to do?”
She has since proven her skeptics wrong.
Last week the 41-year-old packed a suitcase full of Vegemite, salt and vinegar crisps, plus Harry Potter socks and t-shirts for a trip to Venice.
Goninon was part of a group that received a prestigious award.
“I’m not nervous or anything,” she said.
“I like everyone to applaud and be motivated for the audience. [to] get more applause and all that,” she said.
“I like being on time for rehearsals and (knowing) the right lines to say.”
She took part in a Back to Back Theater company tour to present the famous show Food Court and was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Theater at the Venice Biennale.
It was the first time an Australian company had won the award.
Back to Back, which employs creative people with disabilities, was formed in the Victorian coastal city of Geelong in the late 1980s.
Goninon has performed in various shows several times over the past 20 years, but said Food Court was one of his favorites.
The play, set in a shopping mall food court, tells a story of bullying and harassment.
“My character is Jenny. She's a bully. She's the one who intimidates,” Goninon said.
Breaking down barriers
Performing arts educator Kate Stones, who worked with Goninon in her hometown of Bendigo, said it could be difficult for artists living with a disability to be supported in their dreams.
She said it was difficult for Goninon to convince the person who supports her under the national disability insurance scheme to take her ambition as an artist seriously.
“They were like, 'Yeah, yeah, but what do you really want to do?' “, she said.
Goninon's sister, Keryn Negri, said the social worker's words had an impact.
“When the NDIS support worker said [Sarah] She couldn't have her goal being rich and famous, that totally upset Sarah, because that was her only goal,” she said.
“She wanted to leave the NDIS office at that time.”
The next goal in Goninon's plan was to pursue a successful acting career.
“Her determination to live her own life on her own terms is inspiring,” said her sister, who has been her guardian and caregiver since 2012.
“I think she’s extraordinary.”
Ms Stones said Goninon had proven doubters wrong and was “a very accomplished artist”.
“She’s a very charismatic artist,” she said.
“She has a great stage presence. She's very calm on stage. She never gets nervous. She never forgets what she's supposed to do.”
Goninon was thrilled to be part of a theater group performing in Europe.
“It’s my first time (in Venice),” she said.
She couldn't wait to get on a gondola that she could try out with other members of the theater company.
All the while, his family, friends and colleagues were cheering him on.
“We are all extremely proud and very excited for Sarah,” Ms Stones said.
