'Guiding Light' Actor Dies at 80

Renauld White, a one-time actor who became only the second black model to appear on the cover of GQ magazine in 1979, died on June 26. He was 80.

His friend and fashion designer Jeffrey Banks tell Everyday women's clothing White was in hospice care at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan at the time of his death. The cause of his death was not immediately known.

“It is with great sadness that I announce that my dearest friend and work colleague, Renauld White, passed away yesterday,” Banks said. wrote on Instagram June 27. “RENAULD, who has been my model since the beginning of my career, has always been the perfect gentleman and an excellent ambassador for my brand. When he was first introduced to my mother, she immediately declared him to be my “big brother”. I wish it were so.”

White began working as a model in the 1960s and was known for advocating for greater diversity in fashion. He walked for Bill Blass in 1969 and later walked in shows for Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan. He has also worked for Yves Saint Laurent, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Versace, Armani and Cerutti. White came out of retirement in 2023 to model for a Dolce & Gabana campaign, photographed by Steven Meisel.

The model recalled in a 2011 interview (via WWD) calling on Wilhelmina agents to hire more people of color, saying, “I wanted to make a change. I really confronted the establishment on why there weren't more images of black men. At first I thought I was going to be thrown in jail. and beaten because of my approach. But then they realized that they were wrong and that they were behind society and the times, and that they had to listen to me.

Although known primarily for his modeling work, White also tried his hand at acting, showcasing his good looks on daytime television with a brief stint in 1986-87 on THE Guiding Light as William Reynolds. White also appeared in the 2014 TV movie Gun Hill and the 2017 film Central Park.
