K Actor Byeon Woo-seok Seduces Fans With Charm and Tears at Singapore Fan Meet

SINGAPORE After years of supporting roles in hit K-dramas such as Record Of Youth (2020), Byeon Woo-seok finally made his breakthrough with the fantasy-romance Lovely Runner.

South Korean actors’ candid portrayal of K-idol Sun-jae has fueled his rise to international fame. Since the drama series premiered on streaming platform Viu in April, he has gained more than three million followers on Instagram in two months. He now has more than 10.1 million followers.

On his first visit to Singapore, the 32-year-old didn't need to do much to get his fans, affectionately known as Tong Tongs, cheering him on. His Summer Letter fan meeting at the Singapore Expo on June 30 was the fifth stop after Taipei, Bangkok, Manila and Jakarta.

Many fans, mostly women, wore a “Let's Kidnap Sun-jae and Run” headband. It's the same one worn by South Korean actress Kim Hye-yoon in the hit series, in which she goes back in time to save the struggling singer from an untimely death.

Most fans The Straits Times spoke to during the fan meet only noticed the actor because Lovely Runner and Byeon are grateful for the drama's success.

Throughout the fan meet, the 1.9 actor thanked the Tong Tongs, which he called his precious and wonderful gifts.

He offered to take photos with several lucky fans who had the opportunity to re-enact scenes from Lovely Runner with him or receive gifts from the actor.

Byeon burst into tears when he received a surprise gift from his Singapore Tong Tongs: a video of them thanking the actor in Korean for his hard work and encouraging him to persevere while awaiting further performances from him.

Her tears grew even louder as the crowd shouted “Don't cry” in Korean.
