Eyes on Bike Lanes: Progress on Hollywood, Foothill and Torrance Boulevards

Below are three brief updates on the cycle routes.

Under the leadership of City Councilmen Hugo Soto-Martinez and Nithya Raman, the city of Los Angeles is adding new bike lanes protected by parking Hollywood BoulevardIt is a joint project between the city's Office of Streets (StreetsLA) and the Department of Transportation (LADOT), announced in February.

The project is still under construction, but some sections heading east (from Gower Street to Western Avenue) are already completed and in use.

Installation work continues; other parts of Hollywood are still preparing for their close-ups.

The redevelopment of Hollywood Boulevard appears to be largely complete. Bike lanes are being installed first on the south (east) side of the street, with improvements to the west side (pictured) planned for the near future.

Work continues on the eastbound protected bike lane on Hollywood Boulevard. The photo above shows preliminary lane markings that will soon receive thermoplastic striping.

Just before the HLA measure came into effect in April, the city resurfaced Foothill Boulevard from Christy Avenue to Esko Avenue in Lake View Terrace – adding new buffered bike lanes between Wheatland Avenue and Christy. The project is expected to help slow drivers at the site of a horrific hit and run car accident in 2019 which killed two horses and seriously injured their riders.

Foothill is an example of how the HLA works (i.e., how the HLA should work). Its bike lanes were approved as part of the 2015 Mobility Plan. Under the leadership of Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, the lanes were gradually installed and expanded through resurfacing over several years (all before the HLA), and now benefit the safety of all road users.

In a recent resurfacing project, the City of Redondo Beach expanded and modernized bike lanes on Torrance BoulevardThe lanes now extend from Pacific Coast Highway to the city limit (just east of Prospect Avenue) and are painted green in conflict zones.
