Hastings girl wins prestigious video game design award

Tallulah MartinezA 17-year-old games designer from East Sussex has won a prestigious competition.
Tallulah Martinez, from Hastings, has been awarded the top prize in Bafta's Young Game Designers 2024 competition.
His design for The Whispering Wilds won the award for game concept for 15-18 year olds.
She said: “It was absolutely brilliant to win and it was amazing to get that recognition.”
The winning game concept is “set in a world of ancient magic, exploring the open world and discovering the four clans – Dusk, Dawn, Day and Night.”
The student said she designed the game “for all people of all ages.”
She said: “It was something I knew I would enjoy playing and I hoped other people would enjoy it too.”
Tallulah said she hoped playing The Whispering Wilds would “feel like playing a piece of art or painting with your surroundings.”
She said: “I hope to have a career in game design. That would be ideal.”

A Bafta spokesperson said: “We are committed to supporting children interested in games, providing them with hands-on experience in the field and creating accessible pathways into careers in games.”
The winning games, designs and artworks will be exhibited at the Science Museum in London and the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester.
