Pakistani Actor Sarwat Gilani Opens Up About Severe Postpartum Depression: 'I Wanted to Hurt My Newborn'
Sarwat Gilani recently opened up about her struggle with postpartum depression after giving birth. She explained how her husband Fahad Mirza supported her. The Pakistani actor in a interview with Arry Digital said she wanted to let go of her newborn because she was unable to handle the feelings of postpartum depression. Sarwat Gilani Promotes Awareness of Postpartum Depression
Speaking about her experience, Sarwat said, “It was during this time that I came to know what postpartum depression really is. I met my baby after four days in the hospital, after a major surgery. She was having trouble getting milk and so was I. So I felt that I better let her go to get rid of the stress I was going through. When I entered the room, I was crying. I told Fahad that I wanted to harm the newborn. He told me it was postpartum blues.”
She added, “So, it is normal and it is not a permanent feeling. So you have to realize that this weird feeling you are feeling is not you. It is just the mental state you are going through. Therefore, you need to know more about postpartum depression to understand it better. Anything can happen to a person during this phase.”
Sarwat Gilani's acting career
Sarwat made her film debut with the Pakistani television film Shadi Aur Tum Say? Her first film outing was Jawani Phir Nahi Ani, where she played a pregnant Pashtun woman opposite Vasay Chaudhary. She reprised her character in the film's sequel Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2. The actress also made her debut as a theatre director with Kiski Topi Kiskay Sar. Sarwat received acclaim for her supporting role in Saim Sadiq's Joyland.
Sarwat married cosmetic surgeon and actor Fahad Mirza in August 2014. The couple also has two sons – Rohan Mirza and Araiz Muhammad Mirza.
