Sequim City Band Prepares Patriotic Playlist for July 4th
SEQUIM — The Sequim City Band will kick off a day full of music and fireworks with the band's annual Independence Day concert, “A Patriotic 4th of July.”
The performance, a tradition since 1992, will take place at 3 p.m. Thursday at the bandstand of the James Center for Performing Arts at Carrie Blake Community Park, 506 N. Blake Ave.
Following the presentation and posting of the colours by the Dungeness Civil Air Patrol Cadet Colour Guard, the band will fill out the concert with some well-known marches by John Philip Sousa, a medley of popular Glenn Miller numbers and music from the films “The Magnificent Seven” (composer Elmer Bernstein) and “The Patriot” (composer John Williams).
A melodious arrangement of Carmen Dragon's “America, the Beautiful” and Robert W. Smith's “Inchon,” a piece written in tribute to the Korean people and American military personnel who served during the Korean Conflict, will be among the musical offerings.
Past and present military members will be musically honored with “Armed Forces Salute” — a compilation of service songs.
At the end of the concert, as an exclamation point to the day's festivities, a flyover by the U.S. Coast Guard's air rescue helicopter from Port Angeles Air Force Station is planned, provided the crew is not called upon to perform its regular mission.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket and find a spot on the lawn in front of the James Center stage. Children and dogs can enjoy the grassy expanse, and after some fun in the sun, everyone can settle in to enjoy the afternoon concert and evening entertainment on the outdoor stage.
On-site parking and the concert are free.
Concert-goers are also encouraged to stick around through the end of the day, as the city of Sequim is sponsoring more live entertainment — SuperNostaligic at 5 p.m. and Black Diamond Junction at 7 p.m. — capped off by a sunset fireworks display around 10 p.m. at the nearby Albert Haller Playgrounds, directly across from the lawn seats at the James Center.
