Actor Ramesh Pisharody criticises AMMA election process, calling it undemocratic
Differences have emerged over the election of the executive committee of the Association of Malayalam Film Artists (AMMA) at its annual general body meeting held in the city on June 30.
Actor-filmmaker Ramesh Pisharody wrote to the association's members saying he could not sit on the executive committee despite having the required number of votes because the organisation's bylaws required four women to be on the committee.
In a democratic election, the candidate who has secured the highest number of votes should be declared the winner. Only then can one talk about the people's mandate. It amounts to nullifying the people's mandate if one has to give way to those who have secured fewer votes, he said, referring to the election of two women to the committee despite securing fewer votes than him, in line with the women's reservation policy.
Mr Pisharody said officials should have explained the situation to the public to dispel rumours that he could not make it to the executive committee. Had such a scenario been mooted earlier, a male candidate could have withdrawn his candidature, he said. The actor suggested that it would be better to reserve four seats for women in the executive committee to avoid such a situation in future.
The row erupted after actors Kukku Parameswaran and Manju Pillai, who were contesting for the posts of general secretary and vice-president respectively, lost the election. Actress Ananya was the only woman elected to the executive committee. Although actors Sarayu and Ansiba received fewer votes, they were elected thanks to the provision that ensures four women on the executive committee. The newly elected committee is expected to appoint the fourth woman in its first meeting.
