Family wants further investigation into Hollywood student's death – NBC Los Angeles
The family of a 20-year-old woman declared dead after her ex-boyfriend reported a suicide attempt says they are trying to convince investigators to further investigate what happened.
Daelena Mackay was a month shy of her 21st birthday, about to graduate from LA City College and planning a summer trip when authorities said she hanged herself with a scarf in the bathroom of her Hollywood Boulevard apartment.
There was no note.
“Did she commit suicide or was her life taken from her?” asked her brother Kaevaan, speaking on behalf of the family this week to raise questions about events on the night of her death that the family says have not been fully investigated.
“I want the coroner's office to do its job and look at the details,” he said.
According to an LAPD death investigation report, Mackay got into an argument with her ex-boyfriend, with whom she shared a third-floor apartment, on the evening of May 23 over her reconnecting with a man from out of state.
The police report says the ex-boyfriend left the building around 8 p.m. to “de-escalate the situation,” then returned several hours later and said he found Mackay in the bathroom, hanging from a red scarf on the shower curtain rod.
The report says the ex-boyfriend untied Mackay, placed her on the ground and began CPR.
Paramedics arrived and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but pronounced him dead just after midnight.
“I am heartbroken and grieving the loss of my beautiful, intelligent and talented daughter,” said her father, actor Dwayne Adway. “I am calling for a full investigation by the LAPD in hopes of finding truth and justice.”
The LAPD said in a statement Tuesday that detectives thoroughly investigated the circumstances of the death, adding that it was pleased with detectives' efforts and that it had met with the Mackay family several times to try to address each of their concerns.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner on May 25 determined the cause and manner of death to be suicide by hanging, but Mackay's family said they were shocked to learn that no autopsy had been performed.
The medical examiner said in a statement that “an autopsy was not necessary” based on an external examination and the circumstances surrounding the death and referred questions to the LAPD.
“I'm trying to fight for justice,” Mackay's mother Elaine said of her efforts to raise money in recent weeks for a private autopsy after seeing extensive bruising and other injuries while viewing her daughter's body at a funeral home.
“They were so casual about it, 'Oh, this is just another case we're dealing with. This clearly looks like a suicide. Let's just brush it off as such,'” Kaevaan Mackay told the investigation team. “Where's the passion for the response?”
The ex-boyfriend did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
