Community groups seek county help for improvements | News, Sports, Jobs
A pickleball court project in Burlington and the construction of handicapped-accessible restrooms in the historic village of Kenmare are among the projects expected to impact the local organization's budgets in the coming year.
DeSour Valley EDC in Burlington and the Lake County Historical Society in Kenmare presented their budgets to the Ward County Commission on Tuesday requesting annual county assistance.
Bryan Quigley of Lake County said the $17,000 request represents a $1,000 increase from the previous year because of the cost of accessible restrooms. That cost will deplete available funds, he said.
“But we are doing other things, like replacing some windows, changing some shop windows and modernizing the village in every way possible,” he said. “We have just received a donation of over 600 oil lanterns and some 140-year-old spinning wheels. The collection continues to grow, so we are running out of space and are looking for ways to improve our exhibits.”
Lake County is hosting its Pioneer Day on Sunday, July 14, with live music and an all-you-can-eat steak dinner.
Andy Fimrite, president of DeSour Valley, again asked for funds to promote Burlington. The development corporation received $30,000 for 2024. DeSour Valley’s budget for 2025 is $80,000, with notable increases for a proposed pickleball court, which could also serve as a basketball court; walking trail improvements such as canopies over seating areas; and an upgrade to the wading pool’s safety system.
The county commission will respond to requests from area economic development and historical groups when it develops its 2025 budget.
In other business, the commission approved a parking lease with OK Automotive to use its property for employee parking for $5,000 per year. The county would be responsible for removing a fence and providing snow removal. OK Automotive would also have to approve the lease. The lease would replace an existing lease with CPKC Rail for use of the rail property for parking.
