British actor Ian McKellen will not reprise his role after falling on stage

 


British actor Ian McKellen, 85, will not reprise his role as John Falstaff on tour after falling from a London stage mid-performance last month, the play's producers announced Monday.

McKellen was performing in the Player Kings, a production of William Shakespeare's Henry IV, Parts One and Two, in the capital's West End theatre district on June 17 when he lost his balance and fell from the front of the stage during a fight scene.

The actor, best known for playing Gandalf in the film versions of “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” and also playing Magneto in the “X-Men” films, was taken to hospital.

“Two weeks after my on-stage accident, my injuries are improving day by day,” he said in a statement.

“It was with the greatest reluctance that I accepted medical advice to protect my full recovery by not working in the meantime.”

David Semark, McKellen's understudy who ended his career in London, will play the role in Bristol, Birmingham, Norwich and Newcastle, producers said.

McKellen's stage career dates back to 1961, when he played Richard III, King Lear and Macbeth, among others.
