Mississippi’s back-to-school sales tax holiday is now two weeks earlier this year, matching the earlier start of many schools’ school year. The 2024 sales tax holiday will run from 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 12 through midnight Sunday, July 14, making it one of the earliest tax-free holidays in the country.
Legislative changes and new calendar alignments
Lawmakers passed a measure in the 2024 session to move the annual sales tax holiday to the second weekend in July and extend it to Sunday. “Schools are starting earlier. Also, some are moving to a modified calendar, so we want to get a head start,” said state Sen. Walter Michel (R).
Both the traditional and modified school calendars provide for 180 days of school instruction, as required by state law. The modified calendar shortens summer vacation. Schools start about two weeks earlier and extend the school year by about a week. This adjustment allows for additional breaks during the school year.
Adoption of modified calendars and local impact
As the 2023-24 school year begins, 30 districts have adopted a modified calendar, up from 12 the previous year. For example, students in the Gulfport School District will return to school on July 19, while Jackson Public Schools, still on the traditional calendar, will resume on Aug. 7.
As more school districts adopt the modified calendar, the traditional tax holiday schedule has been less beneficial to parents buying clothes and supplies. Some shoppers have crossed state lines to find bargains before the school year begins. Now, with the dates moving closer together, state leaders are hoping to keep those dollars local.
Tax holiday, less than $100
During the tax holiday weekend, sales tax will not be collected on clothing, shoes or school supplies if the sale price of a single item is less than $100. Items priced at $100 or more will still be subject to the regular 7% sales tax. The Mississippi Department of Revenue says sales of qualifying items under $100, ordered by mail, telephone or online, are also tax-exempt if the purchase is made during the tax holiday.

Neighboring Alabama has its sales tax holiday from July 19 to 21, while Tennessee observes it from July 26 to 28. Arkansas follows the first weekend in August.
