The Athens area is abuzz with excitement as Independence Day approaches, and several events are planned to make the day memorable.

Families, friends and neighbors prepare to celebrate with parades, vendors, fireworks and many activities on Thursday, July 4.

The parade will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday at the former Colbert Elementary School, now City Hall, located at 60 W. First Ave., according to the city's website. Parade participants are asked to arrive by 7:30 a.m. to line up and receive instructions.

The City of Jacksonwill have a fireworks display on Thursday, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at 567 Ernest Biles Dr. Parking will be free, admission will be free and no concessions will be provided.

Snellville StarThursday, 4 to 10 p.m., on the Snellville Towne Green, 2342 Oak Rd., with family entertainment and festival food. The event is free, however, all-day children’s armbands are $15. No coolers will be permitted. All rides will close at 9 p.m. and the fireworks will begin when the sky turns dark, around 9:30 p.m.
