Los Angeles City Council Denies Appeal for Hollywood Apartments at 1201 N. Gower Street
At its July 2 meeting, the Los Angeles City Council voted to adopt the findings of an environmental study conducted for a proposed multifamily residential development near Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood, rejecting an appeal that sought to stop the project.
California Reference Group, the applicant behind the proposed project 1201 N. Gower Streetplans to demolish 28 existing apartments to make way for the construction of a new eight-storey building comprising 108 one-, two- and three-bedroom homes above a car park with space for 99 vehicles.

The benefits of the project already being studied by the city's Planning Commission include density incentives to allow for more development than normally allowed by zoning rules. In exchange, 16 of the proposed apartments would be reserved for rental. very low income affordable housing and two additional units of low-rent replacement housing would be provided to offset the existing building.

Once permits are issued, construction work is expected to take approximately 28 months.

The project’s appeal came from the Supporters Alliance for Environmental Responsibility (SAFER), a subsidiary of LIUNA, which often challenges new development projects in the city of Los Angeles. SAFER had argued that the project’s environmental study failed to consider the potential impacts of construction and that rights were granted improperly. A staff report recommended the project be rejected.
The proposed apartment complex is one of several new housing projects being developed near Sunset Gower Studios, including a 169-unit development planned south of Lexington Avenue.
