10-story Hollywood Hotel at 1719 N. Whitley Ave. moves forward
A proposal that calls for Demolition of 1920s Hollywood courtyard apartment complex and replacing it with a mid-rise hotel cleared another hurdle.
Since 2016, owner and plaintiff Fairborz Moshfegh of Whitley Apartments, LLC has planned to raze 40 rent-stabilized apartments just north of the Walk of Fame at 1719 N. Whitley Avenue to make way for a new 10-story building that will include a 156-room hotel with a small gift shop and a three-level garage that can accommodate 122 cars.

Architect Daryoush Safai is designing the building, which would stand about 132 feet tall and include a rooftop terrace.
While the project may seem familiar, this isn’t the first time it’s wound its way through the city’s approval process. The Los Angeles Central Area Planning Commission previously voted to approve the hotel in 2019, over the objections of its tenants and the activists who supported them. That decision was challenged in court, resulting in a ruling that forced the city of Los Angeles to revoke the project’s rights, finding that the findings used in approving the hotel failed to consider how it would relate to the city’s housing component.

The project’s findings have since been updated to reflect the city’s housing component, and new entitlements have been granted for the hotel. Those updated approvals also subject the project to AB 1218, which requires that no net loss of housing be recognized even when a new development does not include housing. Those conditions helped the project win the support of 13th District Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez, who represents the Hollywood area.
The project once again faced an appeal from United Neighborhoods for Los Angeles, its opponent in the previous lawsuit. The council rejected the appeal, upholding earlier votes by its Planning and Land Use Management Committee and the Central Los Angeles Area Planning Commission.
