The incident follows a data breach that occurred in 2022 after a phishing campaign tricked employees into disclosing their login credentials. The attackers accessed data from 163 Twilio accounts and were able to access and register additional devices on 93 Authy accounts.
Twilio traced this leak to an unauthenticated endpoint that it has since secured. Last week, the ShinyHunters threat actor published a list of 33 million phone numbers from Authy accounts on the dark web. underlined by Computer beepThe threat actor appears to have obtained the information by inputting a massive list of phone numbers into Authys' unsecured API endpoint, which would then check to see if they are associated with the app.
We encourage all Authy users to remain vigilant and be more aware of the text messages they receive, Twilio wrote. It added that it has seen no evidence that threat actors have gained access to Twilio systems or other sensitive data and that Authy accounts have not been compromised.
