Hollywood Rethinks Its Contribution to Climate Action
Hollywood creators, celebrities, activists, community leaders and environmentalists came together to exchange ideas and brainstorm how to use their talents and collaborate on climate action at the fifth annual Hollywood Climate Summit.
“Climate is not an isolated issue. It’s the intersection of all issues,” said Heather Fipps, co-founder of the Hollywood Climate Summit.
“The climate crisis is not something that one person, one story, one article, one creator, one organization, one sector, or one country can solve. It is truly an act of radical collaboration at the scale necessary for us to reimagine a world in which we can thrive,” she continued.
Over the last week of June, four afternoons were filled with panelists discussing everything from the uplifting stories and voices of local leaders to how to tell climate stories that aren't all apocalyptic landscapes and creating sustainability on a production set.
The event brought together prestigious names such as science educator Bill Nye, film icon and activist Jane Fonda and best-selling author Roxane Gay.
Held at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences headquarters, the summit was produced with Oscar-quality production, including a live feed and a disembodied voice announcing presenters. In keeping with the planet-friendly theme, the catering service featured an all-vegan menu, reusable cups, and compostable plates.
Sustainable solutions on the plateau
“Often, those of us who are closest to the problem are often closest to the solution,” said Rachel King, director of human resources at dream.org, in introducing the third day of discussions.
The entertainment industry has a role and responsibility in changing narratives, she added.
There's no denying that producing a blockbuster film is expensive and can have a significant environmental footprint.
In a panel titled “Sustainability in Film,” speakers presented ways to make productions more climate-friendly, including how materials departments, set designers and costume designers can do things like save, rent and reuse materials.
Not all of our trash is created equal on a movie set, said writer-director Scott Burns, who has worked on blockbuster films such as Contagion and The Bourne Ultimatum.
A lot of our waste goes to transportation. Transportation and food, like the rest of the world, he continued.
They highlighted companies like Set Zero, a rental company that provides clean-energy equipment and transportation, and Green Spark Group, which tracks the environmental performance of productions, to help filmmakers target and reduce the carbon footprint of future films.
“We all have to look out for each other,” Burns said. “We have to help each other in situations where we start to get compromised.”
Telling Climate Stories
In a panel titled “Infinite Possibilities: Imagining Life in a Climate-Changed World,” Gay (Bad Feminist and World of Wakanda) and Dorothy Fortenberry (The Handmaids Tale and Extrapolations) discussed their writing process and how to tell compelling climate stories.
“In a world where misinformation is rampant, storytelling is a great way to convince people that some things are real and here are some possible effects, here are the causes,” Gay said. “And it doesn’t always have to be a dystopian future, because in many ways we live in a dystopian present.”
She highlighted the implications of climate change and how it disproportionately affects people of color and low-income communities.
“When you look at the world, people of color are the hardest hit by climate change and really by all the other systems of power that are imposed on us,” said Gay, who tries to bring a joyful element to her characters as they navigate an already overwhelming world.
Gay said she hopes people will recognize that it doesn't all have to be so bleak, that there is opportunity for change and that we can hold systems of power to account.
Environmental activism and climate policy
Activists and environmentalists working within their communities to effect change participated in the discussions, including land protector and Indigenous advocate Jody Potts-Joseph, environmental activist Tiana Shaw-Wakeman and activist Nalleli Colbi.
Colbi shared his personal story of growing up in South Los Angeles.
The harsh reality is that the city of Los Angeles is the largest urban oil patch in the country, with about 500,000 residents living within a quarter-mile of an active oil and gas well, Colbi said. I grew up 30 feet from one.
She described the health consequences, including severe nosebleeds that forced her to sleep sitting up in a chair to avoid choking on her blood, heart palpitations and body spasms, headaches, stomach aches, asthma and a diagnosis of reproductive cancer at age 19.
These realities pushed Colbi to engage and organize within his community. The grassroots campaign ultimately led to the permanent closure of AllenCo’s oil drilling site in South Los Angeles.
“All over this country, there are people like Nalleli fighting for their lives,” said Fonda, who is as well-known for her activism as she is for her acting. “You know what the oil companies call these communities? Sacrifice zones.”
Fonda called for an end to fossil fuels, which she said can be achieved through immediate action.
She spoke about corruption in politics, advocated for people to have climate at heart when they go to the polls, and encouraged voting in local elections as well as the presidential election.

She described the conservatives' Project 2025 as a blueprint for fascism, and a second Trump presidency as a step toward dismantling the United States government as we know it.
“The November election is an existential election,” Fonda said. “The president we elect will determine whether our children and grandchildren will have a viable future.”
