Hollywood Teamsters See Scare Tactics in Ongoing Studio Contract Negotiations | News
The Hollywood Teamsters union has warned that it expects studios to use scare tactics as negotiations continue over a new labor contract for drivers, electricians, location managers and other industry workers.
Negotiations were suspended Wednesday (July 3) ahead of the U.S. Independence Day holiday and are scheduled to resume July 8. Talks are currently scheduled to run through July 19, less than two weeks before the current contract covering 8,000 members of the Teamsters and several other unions expires on July 31.
The unions are negotiating with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) under the banner of Hollywood Basic Crafts, following negotiations between the studios and the motion picture workers' union IATSE (the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees).
Tentative agreements reached last week between IATSE and AMPTP on the so-called Hollywood Basic and Area Standards agreements have eased fears of work stoppages in the American industry this summer. But in a message to members this week, the Teamsters and Basic Crafts group took a tough stance on their negotiations.
“We expect that in the coming weeks, companies will attempt to use fear tactics against the reasonable terms our members are fighting for in these negotiations,” the statement said.
Our members will not be the ones left to balance the books for the company's poor business decisions over the past year, the statement added. Next week, we hope to see AMPTP ready to sit down at the table again and be prepared to negotiate and care on the issues our members face.
Earlier this week, IATSE issued a statement of support to other unions, reiterating its full support for Hollywood Basic Crafts' fight for fair wages, safe working conditions, AI protections, strengthened benefits, and more.
We urge the AMPTP to negotiate in good faith and reach fair agreements that take into account the unique priorities of the Teamsters and Hollywood Basic Crafts, the IATSE statement said. Nothing happens without the crew.
