Hartford Mayor Appoints Interim Police Chief

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) Hartford's mayor has named an interim police chief as the capital city continues its search for a permanent replacement.

Hartford Deputy Chief Kenny Howell was named interim police chief by Mayor Arunan Arulampalam on Wednesday.

Howell will take over for Chief Jason Thody, who announced his intention to resign in March.

Authorities said Howell began his law enforcement career in 1991 as a rookie with the New Haven Police Department.

After serving in law enforcement for just under 22 years, Deputy Chief Howell was hired as police chief in the town of Millbury, Massachusetts, where he served for approximately 3 years, Arulampalams’ office said. Throughout his career, he was a strong advocate for building trust and meaningful relationships through community policing.

Howell has been with the Hartford Police Department since December 21, 2020. He oversees patrol operations, administrative services, professional standards and investigative services.

“I am grateful to Mayor Arulampalam for the opportunity to serve under his administration and continue the work that HPD has done to serve the people of Hartford,” Howell said. “I look forward to working with the Mayor and HPD to get to work and continue providing the essential services our residents need as Interim Police Chief.”
