Lions give parish entertainment a boost
At a ceremony Monday, AT&R staff received 12 new 32-inch televisions that will be placed in every room in the department.
Gerald Burgess, Lions Club 202J World Service Team coordinator, said the idea for the donation came from a Lions Club member who was staying in the ward last year.
“A Lions member stayed here last October and asked one of the nurses what all the plugs and sockets in the wall were for.
“They told him it was for televisions, but they didn't get any because the budget had been completely exhausted.
“He contacted me about the 202J area which is from Rakaia to Milton. I live here so he asked me if I could raise money and get 12 TVs.
“I did a bit of research, got a few quotes and then went to all the Lions clubs in South Canterbury and asked them to put their hands in their pockets.”
Mr Burgess said the project had been in the works since Labour Day weekend last year.
“It took us a long time because the quotes didn't last long, but we just worked quietly.
“We had to wait for all the different Lions clubs to confirm and get their approval and we can't really do anything over Christmas, so we started again in February.
“We then had to wait a few weeks for the staff to be ready to receive them, but everything went well and it's a victory… for everyone.
“I am very pleased that this has finally come to fruition and I know the hospital is delighted.”
He said he appreciated the support he received from all the South Canterbury Lions Clubs, whose members worked hard to make the donation happen.
A hospital spokesperson said they were grateful for the Lions' generous donation.
“These new televisions will help create a home-like environment for the hospital’s new assessment, treatment and rehabilitation unit, which helps people with age-related disorders restore their functional abilities and enables them to live as independently as possible.”
