Actor Darshan's judicial custody extended till July 18 in fan murder case

It was claimed that the accused had contacted many people before committing the crime.

A court on Thursday extended the judicial custody of Kannada actor Darshan, his “partner” Pavithra Gowda and 15 others – in a case relating to the murder of a fan of the superstar – till July 18, an official said.

All the accused were produced in court through a video conference organised by officials of Bengaluru Central Jail and Tumakuru District Jail.

The police custody of all the accused named in the murder case, including Darshan, ended on Thursday.

The prosecutor told the court that the judicial detention of all the defendants should be extended, saying they had the lowest respect for the law and had committed serious crimes such as murder and destruction of evidence.

It was also claimed that all the accused had conspired and with common intention committed the crime.

The prosecution said the investigation suggested they destroyed physical, technical and scientific evidence, adding that the murder case was still under investigation and the role of each defendant needed to be further examined.

The police seized Rs 83.65 lakh in cash from the accused and the source of the money is yet to be ascertained.

The mobile phones of the accused have been recovered and sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Hyderabad. A report is pending.

The DVRs should be seized and an FSL report should be obtained, the prosecutor told the court.

It was claimed that the accused had contacted many people before committing the crime.

“…the accused has a powerful fan base. Using the context, the accused can threaten the witnesses. The statements of the witnesses have to be recorded under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and if the accused is released on bail, there is a possibility that the accused will systematically destroy the evidence,” the prosecutor told the court in the remand application.

Darshan, his 'partner' Pavithra Gowda and 15 others were arrested for the murder of Renukaswamy (33), a resident of Chitradurga. Investigation revealed that Renukaswamy, a big fan of Darshan, had sent derogatory messages to Pavithra Gowda on social media.

The victim was allegedly kidnapped, brought to Bengaluru, kept in a shed and tortured to death.
