Bitten by a copperhead

Clifford Harford was bitten on the finger by a copperhead snake while stacking bark at the Williams & Pifer sawmill near Huntersville. Mr. Harford tied a string around the finger and went to Marlinton for treatment. The pain and swelling were considerable. The tried emergency treatment for snakebites, which should be applied immediately, is to open the wound with a knife to make it bleed profusely, suck out the poison, and bathe the part with a strong salt solution. Potassium permanganate is the best local remedy if available. It is also helpful to stop the circulation until the wound is washed by tying a rope or bandage around the limb.

Blue Laws in Covington

Residents of Covington, Virginia are vigorously protesting Sunday blue laws, recently enacted by order of Attorney General R.B. Stephenson. No business establishment in Covington is allowed to be open on Sundays under this blanket order.

As the two-week session draws to a close, no result has come from the Democratic National Convention in New York, as far as the nomination of a candidate for President is concerned. William G. McAdoo has regularly received between 400 and 565 votes on each ballot, down to about forty, but seems unable to muster more votes. John W. Davis, of West Virginia, has obtained over 200 votes out of a little over a hundred on the first ballot, but nothing in the struggle of his friends seems to indicate final success for the West Virginian.

1949, 75 years ago

1,000 people participate in Morlunda

Morlunda Farms, west of Lewisburg, entertained 1,000 guests from eight states Saturday at its seventh annual Spring Field Day, which included livestock judging and a barbecue lunch.

Camp Alleghany opens

Camp Alleghany for Girls opened June 22. More than 200 people, campers, counselors, cooks, babysitters, etc. will camp for several weeks this summer about three miles above Caldwell on the Greenbrier River. Campers will participate in a variety of summer sports, including boating and swimming.

To move

Greenbrier Motor Company, a local Dodge and Plymouth dealership, will move to its new building in Fairlea next week. The building is located on U.S. 2190 in Fairlea, between Lewisburg and Ronceverte.

Juan Perón dies at the age of 78

Crowds of Argentines gathered in downtown Buenos Aires today to mourn the death of Juan Domingo Peron, a symbol of Latin American strongman power and one of the world's most charismatic leaders. The 78-year-old Argentine died Monday of heart failure, leaving his wife of 43 years, Maria Estella, a former cabaret dancer, as the Western Hemisphere's first female president.

Leaders sign agreements at summit

President Nixon and Leonid Brezhev today signed agreements limiting nuclear testing and defensive missile deployments at the conclusion of their summit, but acknowledged their failure to curb the offensive nuclear arms race.

Patients transferred to new premises

When Greenbrier Valley Hospital in Ronceverte moved into its new facility last Saturday, Mrs. Mary Boggs of Ronceverte was the first to be transferred to the Fairlea facility. The first mother-child combination to be transferred was Mrs. Mary Byer of Caldwell and her son, Julian Russell, Jr.

Farmers encouraged to begin administrative procedures for possible drought-related aid

West Virginia is experiencing some of the driest weather since 1988. Many farmers are seeking alternate sources of water for their livestock, have seen significant declines in hay production, and are wondering whether spring-planted crops will survive the germination stage. Although it is too early to tell how severe losses will be in 1999, producers can prepare for possible state or federal assistance.

Governor Announces $25 Million Surplus in Reserve Fund

Gov. Cecil H. Underwood announced last week that the state government ended the fiscal year with a $25 million surplus in the general reserve fund. The governor said the state’s ability to close the year with a surplus despite a 10 percent drop in severance taxes demonstrates the depth of diversity in West Virginia’s economy.

The 7thth The annual Carnegie Kids College is underway. More than 150 students are enrolled this year for fun classes and wacky workshops. During the Chimes, Mirror and Tiles class, students (from left) Christine McClunb, Sarah Brown, Aleander Dennis, Alex Moyers and Amber Wilson help each other apply glazes to their individual tiles in the new Carnegie Hall Pottery Studio.
