Johnny Depp described his Hollywood career as sometimes tragic during an acceptance speech at the National Film Awards.
The 61-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean actor was honored for his role in his comeback film Jeanne du Barrya French historical drama that chronicles the life of King Louis XV's principal mistress, Jeanne Vaubernier, starring Depp as the king.
The film marks Depps' first major role since winning his high-profile defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard in 2022.
While JEanne du Barry received mixed reviews, with The Independentmovie critic Clarisse Loughrey gives it one star out of fiveDepp received the award for worldwide contribution to cinema and appeared in a pre-recorded message to accept it.
In the video released at Thursday night's event in London (July 4), he began: Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak to you today. I feel very fortunate and honoured that you all allow me to continue doing the work that I love to do.
The work I do is inspired by all of you who have come this long way and understood.
He continued: “It is always particularly moving when the recognition of your efforts comes directly from the hearts of the people, the hearts and minds that have joined me on this long, mystical, magical, sometimes tragic but never boring journey.”

He told his fans that they were the reason he still felt the will to keep moving forward.

In The IndependentIn his review of Jeanne Du Barry, Loughrey writes that Depp's comeback performance is so remarkably listless that his casting seems to serve no purpose other than to deliberately stir up controversy.
Loughrey mentions the film’s director, Mawenn, who writes: Mawenn, who is critical of feminism and the #MeToo movement, shows no apparent interest in the relationship between power and gender, content to portray Joan as an 18th-century girl, a free spirit in a court full of painted harpies. There is not an ounce of subtlety here.
The film was controversially chosen to open the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, and Depp received a seven-minute standing ovation from the audience.
Cannes director Thierry Frémaux had been heavily criticised for his decision to open the festival with Depp's film because of allegations made against him by his ex-wife Heard during their defamation trial.
