Bollywood actor arrested in Soetta for animal trafficking
Jakarta, CNBCIndonesia – An Indian citizen, who claims to work as an actor and producer, was arrested at Soekarno-Hatta (Soetta) Airport, Tangerang, Banten, Monday (1/7). He is suspected of attempting to smuggle endangered protected animals.
Head of Customs and Excise at Soetta Airport, Gatot Sugeng Wibowo in Tangerang, said on Thursday (4/7) that the alleged perpetrator admitted that he came to Indonesia for a vacation. The animal evidence obtained from the perpetrator were three rare animals, namely two birds of paradise and an otter.
The deception of the smuggling action carried out by the alleged perpetrator bearing the initials RM began on Monday, July 1, 2024, when the officers became suspicious of the X-ray image of a suitcase of a foreign citizen (WNA) passenger with baggage on Indigo Air flight number (6E 1602) bound for Mumbai, India.
Then, based on these suspicions, the police officer checked the contents of the suitcase and summoned the passengers who were already in the departure lounge.
“The rare animal was hidden in a suitcase containing various kinds of food, clothes, handbags and children's toys,” Gatot was quoted as saying by CNNIndonesia.
The alleged perpetrator admitted that the items he was carrying were handed over by an acquaintance who is also an Indian foreigner at Terminal 2 of Soekarno-Hatta Airport to give to someone.
RM was designated as a suspect for alleged customs criminal offenses under Article 102A of Law Number 17 of 2006 concerning amendments to Law Number 10 of 1995 concerning Customs, with the threat of a maximum criminal sentence of 10 years and a maximum fine of IDR 5 billion.
