Williamsburg Artist Group Takes Part in Wonderful Summer

WILLIAMSBURG The Williamsburg Artists Group's artistic offerings and installations are featured during the Busch Gardens Summer of Wonder.

According to the park, the new event is a mix of art, music and food in addition to its many attractions. Busch Gardens Williamsburg has partnered with local Virginia artisan groups to feature art installations throughout the property, including custom murals designed and created specifically for the park.

One of the groups that Busch Gardens has partnered with for this event is the Williamsburg Artists Group (WAG). Founded in 2018, the group now comprises 67 local artists with a mission to create new opportunities for the community to view, enjoy and purchase art and for artists to exhibit their work locally.

WAG artists created a community mural for visitors to paint, painted a LOVE installation, and are selling art in the exhibition space, all taking place at the WAG Pavilion with additional plein air painting around the park.

Laurie Rokutani, a spokeswoman for WAG, said Busch Gardens reached out to WAG via email through its Facebook page to ask if any of the artists would be interested in participating in Busch Garden's summer program since it focused on art.

“We got together as a big group to brainstorm what we wanted to do,” Rokutani said. “Some people were really interested in plein air painting because that’s what they loved, and Melody thought it would be a really good idea to spread people out throughout the park and be able to interact with them while we do what we do, which is paint.”

“Then someone came up with the idea of ​​doing a LOVE sign because they're all over Virginia and they're supposed to be a Virginia thing and the whole Summer of Wonderland is supposed to be about Virginia, so we decided to go for it,” Rokutani added.

The idea of ​​the mural is to allow WAG to interact with the guests and involve them as well.

“It was an opportunity for the WAG artists to come together and do something together as a project. Usually we just do shows and don’t get a lot of opportunities to interact, so this project was fabulous,” Rokutani said.

Busch Garden's Summer of Wonder will continue through August 11 with WAG members. The pavilion is located in the Oktoberfest area, across from Verbolten.
