As discussions continue on this grim situation, Karan Johar, one of India's most accomplished filmmakers, has spoken on the subject, saying that a rethink and change in the definition of theatrical success is the need of the hour.
“First of all, the tastes of the audience have become very specific. They want a certain type of cinema. And if you (as a filmmaker) want to make a certain number of films, then your film has to be screened in A, B and C centres. Multiplexes alone will not suffice,” he said in a discussion with journalist Faye DSouza on her YouTube channel.
“At the same time, the cost of making a film has gone up. There has been inflation. There are about 10 viable actors in Hindi cinema, and they all ask for the sun, the moon and the earth. So, you pay them, then you pay for the film, then comes the marketing expenses. And then your film doesn’t do the job. These film stars who ask for Rs 350 crore open at Rs 3,500 crore. How does that math work? How do you manage all that? Yet you have to keep making films and creating content because you have to feed your organisation as well. So there is a lot of drama, and the syntax of our cinema has not found its place,” he added.
“In the case of Hindi cinema, there has been a certain kind of syntax in every decade. Right now, we are saying, 'If Jawan And Pathan “If it worked, should we just do action?” Everyone would rush in that direction. And suddenly, a love story would work. I feel like we are running around like headless chickens. The conviction has taken a complete hit, and it is all about herd mentality. We did not realise that there is a certain audience today who want grounded Indian cinema and, without the pressure of what critics have to say, pure joy,” he noted.
“They also don’t want alienating cinema. When you talk about urban syntax and alienate tier-2 cities and small town complexes, you don’t do that massive business. You can do such urban cinema, but at a certain cost,” Karan added.
