Veteran actor and theatre artist Gopinatha Rao dies at 71

Veteran actor and theatre artiste Gopinatha Rao of Crazy Creations passed away in the city on Friday evening after a brief illness. He was 71.
He started his career as a theatre artist in Crazy Creations and travelled with the troupe for nearly four decades. He played various characters in nearly 4,000 shows with the troupe and acted in nearly 25 films. He is best known for his film roles, including that of Varadhu Kutty in Kamal Haasan's Michael Madana Kama Rajan and Icefruit Iyer in K. Bhagyarajs Pavunu Pavunuthan.
Maadhu Balaji of Crazy Creations recounted his long association with Mr Rao, also known as Kulla Gopi since his school days in Mandaveli. He was my senior in school and also a friend. He joined our cricket team which was later transformed into a theatre group. The stage performances transformed Gopi's shy personality into a talented comedian whose mere presence on stage made the audience burst into laughter, Mr Balaji said.
Mr Rao, who was then a bank clerk, played popular roles in many dramas, including Wedding at the Saloon And Alaudin 100 watt bulb. It was presented by director K. Balachanders Pikkal Kuthirai and also starred in Rajinikanth-starrer VeeraAfter a break due to ill health, he resumed his acting career in Crazy Creations. Krishna Chocolate from 2008 to 2014, Mr. Balaji added. Mr. Rao is survived by his wife.
