Deep down, I'm a very superficial person. That's why I was dismayed to find that some books had age-restriction recommendations on the back cover.

I may not be the ideal middle school student these authors have in mind, but since when do we discourage adults from reading James Patterson? What kind of dystopian society do we live in?

I know what you're going to say. Books have age restrictions to keep children from seeing content that might turn them into smokers, humor columnists, or other burdens on society.

This is not to prevent adults from reading children's literature. Of course.

Very well. Perhaps you are right, you, the intelligent and profound man. But there was a time when I, at least, thought about the limits imposed on books in a rather different way.

I remember having literacy tests in school. We were graded from A to Z. My teacher told me an F wasn't low enough for me, so she had to adjust the scale a little.

You had to read one or two pages out loud in front of the teacher. Then she would grade you based on your reading level. I got a grade.

I never got a perfect score on a reading assessment. I lost points once because I didn't read a chapter heading out loud. “You have to read everything on the page,” the teacher told me.

The next time I lost points because I read the page numbers. Go figure. Some people are never satisfied.

We had shelves in the classroom labeled according to your reading level. You had to choose books from your shelf.

There were some interesting books on other shelves. I wanted to try them. But I was told to put the idea aside and go find the right book. Or maybe it's the other way around.

I thought it was stupid. Those rules were stupid. The teacher was stupid.

I didn't have a “limited vocabulary.” Those who said that weren't… well, they certainly weren't very nice.

But I couldn't help but pick the book from the Q library. Some time later, my brother took me to the library. I picked “Peter Pan.”

My brother stopped me. “Haven’t you read it yet?” he asked.

Of course I did. But it was a Q-level book. There were only about ten of them on the classroom shelf, and I had been told repeatedly not to take any more.

My brother wouldn't let me leave the library until I picked out a new book, even though I protested the whole way home that it wasn't allowed and I'd be demoted to a W, or worse.

My brother told me that I wouldn't learn better by reading books at my reading level. I would learn better by reading books at a reading level higher than my level.

If I tried, I could learn something from any book, no matter what it was. Unless it was a book by James Patterson. In that case, it would be just cheap entertainment.

Well, okay. Maybe his books have value too. Especially as fire starters.

It doesn't matter if your grade is a Q, a W, or a letter that hasn't been invented yet, my advice is the same: read whatever you want, as often as you can, as long as you learn something.

It doesn't matter what your reading level is. If you're interested, you're… well, you can complete the text.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
