Karan Johar suggests rethinking film success as Bollywood faces crisis

Even though films have returned to theatres after the pandemic, Bollywood is going through a crisis as many films are failing to achieve box office success.

In an illuminating conversation with journalist Faye DSouza on her YouTube channel, Karan Johar suggested a recipe for a complete overhaul that is a theatrical success.

“First of all, the tastes of the audience have become very specific. They want a certain type of cinema. And if you (as a filmmaker) want to make a certain number of them, then your film has to be screened in A, B and C centres. Multiplexes alone will not suffice,” he explained.

He added that Bollywood producers have to walk a tightrope financially as the production costs of films have increased due to inflation. Also, actors are demanding high fees.

There are about 10 viable actors in Hindi cinema, and they all ask for the sun, the moon and the earth. So you pay them, then you pay for the film, and then comes the marketing expenses. And then your film doesn't make the cut. These film stars who ask for Rs 350 crore, open at Rs 3,500 crore. How does that math work? How do you manage all that? Yet you have to keep making films and creating content because you have to feed your organisation too. So there is a lot of drama, and the syntax of our cinema has not found its feet, Kjo said.

Talking about the current situation, he said, “There has been a certain syntax in every decade of Hindi cinema. Right now, it’s like if Jawan and Pathaan worked, should we do only action? So everyone is running in that direction. I feel like we are running like headless chickens. The conviction has taken a complete hit, and it’s all about herd mentality. We haven’t realised that there is a certain audience today who want grounded Indian cinema and, without the pressure of what critics have to say, pure joy.”

Recently, Bollywood has witnessed two mega-budget, mega-movie films that turned out to be flops. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, made on a budget of Rs 350 crore, grossed only Rs 64.5 crore within five weeks of its release; while Ajay Devgns Maidaan, made on a budget of Rs 250 crore, grossed less than Rs 50 crore in the same period.
