Actor from Dallas spin-off Knots Landing dies

LOS ANGELES Doug Sheehan, a television actor whose career included multi-year stints in the 1980s on the daytime drama General Hospital and the primetime soap opera Knots Landing, a spin-off of Dallas, has died.

Sheehan died peacefully on June 29 at his home in Big Horn, Wyoming, with his wife Cate Abert by his side, according to an obituary published by Kane Funeral Home. The cause of death was not released. He was 75 years old.

A native of Southern California, Sheehan launched his professional acting career in the late 1970s with small roles on ABC's original Charlie's Angels and CBS's Emmy-winning series Kaz. Then, in 1979, Sheehan found his niche when he made his acting debut as private investigator Joe Kelly on ABC's General Hospital.

During her stint on General Hospital from 1979 to 1982, Sheehan appeared in over 200 episodes, bringing Joe Kelly's pivot from detective to lawyer and his romantic relationships to the screen.

Sheehan's soap career remained steady as he landed a multi-year engagement with CBS's Knots Landing shortly after his debut on General Hospital. After Joe Kelly on GH, Sheehan played journalist Ben Gibson, the second husband of Joan Van Arks Valene Ewing, for over 100 episodes of Knots.

The actor returned to ABC to co-lead his family sitcom Day by Day, which aired from 1988 to 1989. The series also starred Linda Kelsey, Christopher Daniel Barnes, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Courtney Thorne-Smith and Thora Birch.

After years of involved television commitments, Sheehan appeared to step back from leading roles and instead appeared as supporting or minor characters in series including MacGyver, Dear John and Columbo in the early 1990s.

In 1997, he returned to ABC for the series adaptation of Amy Heckerling's Clueless, replacing Michael Lerner as Mel Horowitz. The series moved from ABC to UPN for its third season and was canceled in 1999.

Sheehan's television credits also include Passions, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and What I Like About You.

Beyond his profession, Sheehan was also a passionate polo player.

I first saw polo at the Great Gatsby Day charity gala at Will Rogers Park a few years ago, Sheehan told the Times in 1987, and I was so hooked on the antique Rolls-Royces and English boots that I went and signed up for polo lessons the next day.

Sheehan is survived by his wife. A funeral is planned, according to Kane Funeral Home.
