Actor Hill Harper Answers Questions Ahead of Senate Battle With Elissa Slotkin

Harper and Rep. Elissa Slotkin will vie for the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow.

DETROIT (FOX 2) – Actor Hill Harper welcomed A-list talent to Detroit on Thursday to boost his profile ahead of the August primaries.

Harper is running for the U.S. Senate in a hotly contested race that is considered one of the most competitive in the country. FOX 2 caught up with Harper to chat ahead of a fundraiser with comedian Dave Chapelle.

Harper and Rep. Elissa Slotkin will vie for the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow.

Slotkin is considered the favorite to win, but politics can be very surprising. Harper took a number of questions Thursday and spoke in depth, starting with the war between Israel and Hamas.

“Peace means demanding an end to war – 74 percent of Michigan Democrats support a cease-fire,” Harper said. “How do we get there? I refuse all funding from the Arab American Political Action Committee. We have to make sure that special interests, political action committees, don’t control our representatives.”

“Should we end terrorism? Absolutely. Is Hamas wrong? We can end Hamas without killing innocent civilians. That doesn't mean we have to bomb the entire region.”

Hilary Golston, FOX 2 “Was the administration's handling of the war appropriate? Should it have stopped sending munitions and weapons sooner?”

“I think the administration has failed in this area, there's no doubt about it,” Harper said.

Inflation is down, but prices remain high and American consumers are feeling it.

Hilary Golston, FOX 2: “There's a tax on the most vulnerable Americans, that's how they see inflation.”

“Inflation is a regressive tax,” Harper said. “Sixty percent of Michiganders live paycheck to paycheck. What’s even worse is that 30 percent of our Michigan seniors are trying to survive on $15,000 a year. Now that inflation is reinforcing that, people are getting crushed. They’re getting punched in the face.”

“It's because there is collusion between big business interests and our current representatives and we have to stop that. We have to stop that systemically, by electing new candidates.”

Hilary Golston, FOX 2: “The Biden administration has a very ambitious goal: to have half of new vehicle sales be electric by 2030. That's a huge investment. Trillions of dollars of taxpayer money.”

“Do you think it is right for the administration to set these goals or should companies decide for themselves and let consumers decide?”

“The problem is that the goals don’t match the infrastructure or the system,” Harper said. “There’s a pretty famous quote that says no one really hits their goals, they hit their systems.”

“It’s great to have a great goal, to have all these electric vehicles on the road, but if there’s no place to charge them, it doesn’t work – the system isn’t in place. So what we need to do is first build the infrastructure. We need to invest in the infrastructure of this country.”

The Michigan primary will be held on August 6. FOX 2 reached out to opponent Elissa Slotkin's office but did not receive a response by deadline.
