Reliance, Bollywood fuel buzz around Ambani's wedding

The son of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani married Friday in a lavish ceremony that has caused a stir at home and abroad, with his father's $260 billion Reliance conglomerate using social media to widely publicise the event.
Reliance's efforts, coupled with posts from a host of Bollywood stars and media coverage, helped spark public interest in the wedding, overshadowing some critical social media posts that have questioned opulence at a time of growing inequality in India.
Ambani's youngest son Anant, 29, will marry his long-time girlfriend Radhika Merchant, 29, in a lavish ceremony in Mumbai attended by celebrities and politicians including Kim Kardashian, Mike Tyson, Tony Blair and Boris Johnson. Three days of festive receptions will follow.
An unnamed Reliance executive called the event “a powerful symbol of India's growing stature on the global stage.”

Ambani, Asia's richest man, is known for throwing lavish parties, especially for his three children Akash, Isha and Anant. International artists perform and a host of Bollywood stars typically attend the gatherings, which cost millions.
It promises to be Ambani's most extravagant gala yet, although it is unclear how much was spent.

Some, like opposition politician Thomas Isaac, have called the amount of spending “obscene.”

The wedding ceremonies were considered a public event, leading to traffic restrictions in a key business district of Mumbai for four days, also sparking public anger.
With access limited and details closely guarded, information disseminated to the eager public is partly done through Reliance's official Facebook page, which has 2.3 million followers.
The account shared video clips of dance performances and photographs to give a glimpse into the private celebrations.
This week, a post on Reliance's Facebook account, which received 54,000 likes, showed the Ambani family dancing to a Bollywood song that features at most Indian weddings at a private musical ceremony. The event was promoted with hashtags such as #ARWeddingCelebrations.
Media access to the wedding venue was restricted on Friday evening, with only a limited number of photographers and television crews allowed to capture the entering guests.
Spectators stood in the rain with umbrellas outside the venue, some taking photos, with the sound of Bollywood audible from inside.
A foreign company executive in India who is due to attend Ambani's wedding this weekend told Reuters that ceremony organisers would likely put tape over the phone cameras of incoming guests to ensure no photos were taken.
Most of Ambani's celebrations are closely watched.
Wedding events began in March with a three-day pre-wedding party with 1,200 guests and a performance by superstar Rihanna, followed by a luxury European cruise with 800 guests in May.
Days later, several Bollywood actresses posted pictures on Instagram wearing luxury designer labels to their millions of followers, without any details about the Ambani cruise celebrations.
The interest is such that Indian television channels are following the wedding minute by minute.
