Actress Ashley Judd, Democratic activist, adds voice to those calling for Biden to quit race

(AP) – Actor Ashley Judd adds his voice to the calls for President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race after his performance in last month's debate, arguing that she fears he will lose to Republican Donald Trump in November.

In a opinion piece In a USA Today op-ed Friday, Judd called on Biden to step aside voluntarily and gracefully so his party could support a talented and robust Democrat for president. She portrayed Biden during the debate as incapable of countering Trump, as he spouted an avalanche of maddening lies unchecked.

Judd, who is an outspoken supporter of Biden and other Democrats across the country, highlighted the political activism that accompanied her decades-long career in Hollywood. Her allegations against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein helped spark the #MeToo movement.

Warning that she fears Trump will wield the power of the presidency with unprecedented and incalculable cruelty and injustice if voters return him to the White House, Judd said time is of the essence for Democrats to replace Biden with a candidate capable of defeating him.

We cannot allow our distractions or divisions to persist one more day, she said.

Judd did not offer a possible replacement for Biden at the top of the ticket, and a representative did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on who she might suggest.

His call comes as Democrats debate whether they want Biden to remain their party's nominee, amid concerns about his age and ability to win the general election against Trump.

Earlier this week, movie star and longtime Democrat George Clooney said in a New York Times Opinion Article that he likes Biden but that the party would lose the presidential race as well as any other in Congress if he were a candidate. He cited what he characterized as a diminished Biden during interactions around a fundraiser in Los Angeles last month.

Judd was at the White House in April to help the Biden administration promote its new national suicide prevention strategyto which she lost her mother, singer Naomi Judd, in 2022. The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on Ashley Judd's article.
