Defying every sense of taste, the pop singer's comeback single is too disheartening to even be close to camp. It's dreadful.
No one commits like Katy Perry. When she sings in Simlish, she puts her heart into it. Her Vegas residency, launched in 2021 at the nadir of her career, included a lengthy track in which she interacted with a giant toilet. Sometimes, the universe completes the track for her: “The One That Got Away” was the only single from her gargantuan 2010 album, Teenage Dream, that didn’t reach No. 1 on the Hot 100. She’s the Jenna Maroney of pop music, meeting every challenge with a blank stare and nothing less than 150 percent commitment.
This is Perry’s greatest strength, but also her fatal flaw. When she does something half-heartedly, you can really see it: rhyming trouble with bubble would be a hit on a track about a sexy foam party, but Katy ruined it on a reggae song about the dangers of technology, or something. But when it comes to politics, Perry just seems bored, so much so that a comeback single called Woman’s World seems like an inevitable conclusion. And yet, when she describes women as so smart, she sings it with this hesitant, unintentionally condescending beat that leaves you with no choice but to assume she’s being sarcastic. Now that’s a good song.
With its pulsing synths and fast-paced chorus, Woman’s World clearly takes inspiration from Lady Gaga’s 2020 single Stupid Love , a cheeky return to form that successfully launched Gaga into the second act of her career. There seems to have been a miscalculation, though: Stupid Love worked not because of its sound, but because it took the core elements of Gaga’s music—slightly absurd lyrics, an acid-trip concept, a general struggle with vowels—and cranked them up to 11. It’s baffling that Perry chose to headline her comeback with a vaguely political song—you just get the sense that she either doesn’t like or care about that kind of thing.
Even if Woman’s World didn’t feel like its author needed to have feminism explained to her by the first half of the first page of Google, its message of empowerment would have rung hollow, simply because it was co-written and co-produced by Dr. Luke, the producer accused in a since-dismissed lawsuit of sexual assault and emotional abuse that he has denied. It’s honestly twisted, if not surprising. I generally think you have to be at least a little hypocritical and amoral to be a celebrity or a pop star, and I applaud those who are willing to do so. But it also reveals Woman’s World to be an even more monumental disaster: If Perry was willing to put up with the bad press that comes with creating a song about women’s liberation with an alleged abuser, shouldn’t the song at least be a hit? Instead, it’s incredibly tepid, irritating at best. In the immortal words of Sister Catherine Rose Holzman, spoken moments before her death: Katy Perry, please stop. [
