Biden, others condemn shooting at Trump rally in Pennsylvania
Joe Biden is among those across politics and Hollywood reacting to the deadly shooting at Donald Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.
The former president's campaign said Trump was “fine” after being rushed off stage when gunfire erupted. The shooting is being investigated as an attempted assassination of Trump, law enforcement officials told The Associated Press. A local prosecutor said the suspected shooter and at least one participant are dead.
Hours after the shooting, Trump wrote on his Truth Social website that a bullet “pierced the upper part of my right ear.” He added: “I knew immediately something was wrong, I heard a whistling sound, gunshots, and I immediately felt the bullet tear the skin. There was a lot of bleeding, so I knew what was going on.”
“I want to thank the United States Secret Service and all law enforcement for their swift response to the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania,” the former president added in his message. “More importantly, I want to offer my condolences to the family of the person killed at the rally, as well as the family of another person who was seriously injured.”
Biden condemned the deadly shooting at Trump's campaign rally, writing in a statement: “I have been informed of the shooting at Donald Trump's rally in Pennsylvania. I am grateful to hear that he is safe and doing well. I am praying for him and his family and everyone who was at the rally as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There is no place for this kind of violence in America. We must come together as a nation to condemn it.”
The president later said in a televised press briefing Saturday night that he had tried to get in touch with Trump, adding: “I hope to talk to him tonight.”
“Look, there is no place in America for this kind of violence,” he continued. “It’s wrong. It’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. We cannot allow this to happen. We cannot do this. We cannot condone this.”
The White House later said Biden spoke to Trump on Saturday night.
