Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs bring authentic rock n roll to Sound Board – Daily Tribune

As he led his band, the Dirty Knobs, on stage Sunday night, July 14, at the Sound Board at Detroit's Motor City Casino, Mike Campbell promised a night of “rock 'n' roll soul healing, the way it's meant to be.”
That's an excellent description of the quartet's 21-song show that lasted just over two hours.
The Dirty Knobs are every bit the “authentic rock ’n’ roll band” that Campbell, clad in his silver jacket, describes a few songs later, and they earned that title in all honesty. They were, of course, the late Tom Petty’s top lieutenant in the Heartbreakers as well as on Petty’s solo albums (and a session resume that is… well, long). The Dirty Knobs established their footing in the rock clubs of Los Angeles before becoming Campbell’s main concern, and the edition of the band that played at the Sound Board included Steve Ferrone, a Heartbreaker from 1999 to 2017—who made his way through the set to exorcise the heartbreak of his native England’s UEFA European Championship defeat earlier that day.
Last Sunday, the band played… wait for it… a lot of authentic rock 'n' roll, on the penultimate show of their latest tour in support of Dirty Knobs' third album, “Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits,” released earlier this year. They played the “Wreckless Abandon” described in the show's opening song with an old-school ensemble expertise that favored feeling over precision—though you'd have been hard-pressed to spot any glaring errors. As with the band's first performance last summer at St. Andrew's Hall, there was an unmistakable and completely understandable Heartbreakers spirit to the performance, right down to Campbell's vocal cadences and droll sense of humor (not to mention the parade of high-end guitars that surely had the aficionados in the audience salivating).
And there was the Heartbreakers’ music, which was also predictable. This time around, though, the Dirty Knobs dug into that repertoire for rarities like “Fault Lines,” “All or Nothin’,” the psychedelic “Can’t Stop the Sun,” “Makin’ Some Noise” and “Let Me Up, I’ve Had Enough,” though they dipped into the A-list with an anthem “Even the Losers” (introduced by Campbell’s wife, Marcie) and “I Need to Know,” sung by tambourine-shaking crew member Holly B. in a performance that channeled Stevie Nicks—who has often performed the song at her own concerts.
Opening act B. and Shannon McNally joined Dirty Knobs for the show's closing song, “You Wreck Me.”

Campbell and guitarist-keyboardist Chris “Sidewinder” Holt joined McNally for Fleetwood Mac’s “Gold Dust Woman” during his set, while McNally returned the favor by covering Lucinda Williams’ duet portion of “Come Hell or High Water,” one of eight songs the band played from the “Vagabonds…” album, including high-octane renditions of “Shake These Blues,” with Holt sharing vocals — “Angel of Mercy,” “So Alive” and others, while Campbell pulled a playful “F*** That Guy” among several others from 2020’s “Wreckless Abandon.”
It’s no small feat building another successful band in the wake of one of rock’s most iconic bands, especially without the same support mechanisms that helped establish Petty and the Heartbreakers. The quality of the music and the caliber of the playing live up to the legacy, though, and Sunday’s show showed that while he could certainly rest on his laurels, Campbell is far more interested in, as the songs say, continuing to make (really good) noise.
