WeHo City Staff Provides Update on West Hollywood Log Cabin Renovation and Expansion
At a regular meeting of the West Hollywood City Council on Monday, July 15, 2024, city staff provided an update on West Hollywood Log cabin as part of a quarterly update on major capital improvement projects related to City-owned properties and public parks. In May 2022, the City completed the purchase of the property located at 617-621 N.
Robertson Avenue, which includes a 2,090-square-foot log cabin that is a designated cultural monument
structure and a 29-space parking lot. The purchase includes a title restriction that
limits the use of the property to recovery services and surface parking (the
(uses of the property).
Actual status:
The city hired Lehrer Architects to design and
construction drawings for the renovation and extension of the property to meet current requirements
Code and ADA Requirements and Program Needs for West Hollywood Recovery
Centre (WHRC). The log cabin was deemed eligible for cultural monument status
and any renovation will have to follow preservation guidelines. The project received a
Certificate of Adequacy and CEQA Authorization with Historic Preservation
Meeting of the commissions of June 25, 2024. The team of architects prepares the construction
drawings and should be submitted for plan control in early October 2024.
Staff
works with the WHRC who hired a professional fundraiser and launched a
capital fundraising campaign with a goal of $5,000,000, which would include financing
for capital improvements and an endowment. The city received $1,150,000 in public funds
funds, $800,000 in federal funds and anticipates additional funding from Los Angeles
County. Once staff have a better understanding of the total funding available from the
WHRC staff and other sources will return to City Council with a funding strategy for
construction of the proposed improvements.
The addition of two rooms for 12-step fellowship meetings will allow the WHRC to operate out of one facility, instead of the log cabin and Werle building across the street.
The WHRC hosts over 90 addiction recovery meetings per week, or over 4,500 meetings per year. For more information, please visithttps://thewhrc.org/home.
