South Korean actress Samyuktha to make Bollywood debut with Kajol: You need to improve your skills for this industry

South fame Samyuktha is all set to make her Bollywood debut alongside Kajol and Prabhu Deva in the thriller Maharagni – The Queen of QueensTouching on some of the language barriers that exist between the South and Hindi film industries, she says these are disappearing and it is time for cross-collaborations.

I am originally from Kerala but I work more in Telugu. I came into cinema at a time when all the language barriers were gradually disappearing. Pushpa came out at that time and a lot of other big films, everyone was watching those films in other languages. So, it is more of a cross-linguistic collaboration that is happening now. Even in Telugu, a lot of Hindi actors are doing very good roles and our lead actors are also acting in Hindi films, says the actor, adding, “As an actor, you would want to see all the textures. I feel like I am starting from level one in another language. You have to improve your skills for Bollywood, there is a lot of healthy competition.”

The actor, known for his Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil films including Edakkad Battalion 06 (2019), Bheemla Nayak (2022) and Kalki (2019), considers Bollywood to be a larger-than-life cinema. Malayalam is a very content-driven industry. On the other hand, Telugu is a mix of everything, massive and content-centric. In Hindi, I think I will be able to say it better once I work more here, but from what I see, people are more interested in cinema that is larger than life and where unexpected things happen, says the 28-year-old.

Lately, I feel like the gap between South and Hindi cinema is closing. Many of my films, including one with Dhanush, have been dubbed in Hindi and it has done very well. It is not just the actors, but also the audiences in the South and the North who have started accepting each other's content wholeheartedly. It started with Bahubali and it is still going on today, I am happy about it!” she adds, pointing out that both audiences now enjoy watching each other's content.

I play the role of Kajol Maam's sister in the film. What I like about the film is that the way it happened to me is very interesting. One of the Telugu directors called me and said that a director wanted to meet me for a Bollywood film. It's not every day that you get a meaningful commercial film. It has action, songs and a good message, it's full of colours, I would say, she says.

Ask the actress if she faced any particular challenges or obstacles while shooting for the project, which is still ongoing, and she says, “I was really new to the language, it was difficult to deliver my lines in Hindi. Kajol Maam was giving me cues, she was really helpful and we got along really well. When you are working with an experienced actor, you don’t want to make him uncomfortable by doing a second or third take, so it’s a pressure. All those thoughts came to me, but it went really well.”
