The Movie Guru: 'Twisters' and 'Young Woman and the Sea' Are Both Very Satisfying for Fans of the Genre

Don't focus on whether “Twisters” is a sequel or a remake. The important thing is that if you liked the original, you'll like this one.

The new film manages to beautifully capture the mood of the original without copying anything but the basic concept. There are still plenty of dramatic and dangerous moments, a nice touch of cinematic science, and engaging enough characters to make the quieter moments interesting. There's also a greater emphasis on the impact of the tornadoes, a nice modern touch. Add to that the incredible chemistry between Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones, and it all adds up to a great night at the movies.

The most astute viewers will sense the trauma from the opening scenes of the film, but the bulk of the movie follows Kate Carter (Edgar-Jones) years after the tornado trauma. When an old friend asks her to get back into the storm-chasing game, she must confront both her past and some of the biggest tornadoes Oklahoma has ever seen. Can she find a way to help everyone in the tornadoes' path?

Edgar-Jones is good as the traumatized scientist, brave despite an extremely understandable PTSD. Powell continues to be the most charismatic leading man in Hollywood at this point, taking what could have been a deeply clichéd character and making him immensely likeable. They are a delight together on screen, charming enough at times to make the film seem like an unusually sober romantic comedy. Anthony Ramos has a smaller role, but he brings real depth.

If only all sequels/remakes were this satisfying.

The Young Woman and the Sea (Disney+)

If you're one of those people who finds stories about sports underdogs deeply satisfying, then you absolutely must check out “The Young Woman and the Sea.”

Inspired by the true story of a young woman determined to overcome all obstacles and succeed in her swimming career in 1926, “The Young Woman and the Sea” is a simple and satisfying look at what it takes to achieve your dreams. Anchored by a strong performance from Daisy Ridley, the film is every bit as uplifting in its own way as classics like “Rudy” and “Hoosiers.” While the emotional beats are all familiar, it delivers all the energy you could want.

Daisy Ridley stars as Trudy Ederle, a working-class girl growing up in Manhattan who dreams of becoming a professional swimmer. Unfortunately, no one took female swimmers seriously at the time, and the struggle to get sponsors and legitimacy is nearly impossible. Rather than give up, she decides to go to France and train to become the first female swimmer to cross the English Channel.

The structure of the film is old school, harking back to the era of films like “The Rookie,” “Miracle,” and “Remember the Titans.” This makes it incredibly family-friendly, and while it also means there are no surprises, fans of the genre won’t miss these films in the slightest. Ridley does a fantastic job as Ederle, who is so determined to swim that it’s easy to buy into her dream. We may not understand how important it is to swim the English Channel, but Ridley makes us feel just how important it will be to Ederle. After that, how can we help but root for her?
