WILLIAMSBURG Tunes in Town is an occasional series that revisits some of the local musical talent that calls Hampton Roads home.

Bad Habit is a local rock band that has become a favorite for many Williamsburg music lovers. The band is known for performing 70s, 80s, and 90s rock at many local venues and festivals.

Bad Habit consists of lead vocalist Paul Collins, guitarist and vocalist Rich Tisdale, bassist Nelson Scott, saxophonist, keyboardist and vocalist Rob Noblin, and drummer and vocalist Pete Owens.

“All of the band members have been playing music for many years. I’ve known two of them for over 30 years. It’s really fun to get together and work toward a common goal with four other guys who love pretty much the same music. Getting in front of an audience and making people happy for three hours listening to the music they grew up with is always fun,” Tisdale said.

Bad Habit's favorites include Boston's “Foreplay/Long Time,” Toto's “Rosanna” and “Hold the Line,” Journey's “Stone in Love,” Donnie Iris' “Ah! Leah!”, REO Speedwagon's “Roll with the Changes,” and RUSH's “Limelight.”

For Tisdale, playing guitar is one of her favorite hobbies.

“First of all, it’s playing guitar and playing music that I love. Then there’s the camaraderie that comes with being in the band and working toward a common goal. And of course, it’s always nice to get positive reactions from the audience. We try to get that reaction like, ‘I can’t believe you played that song!’” Tisdale said.

Tisdale, who has also recorded music of his own, has drawn inspiration from some of the world's most famous guitarists.

“Like a million other guys my age, Eddie Van Halen is the guy who changed my life musically. I wouldn’t even play guitar without him. But I also love a lot of other musicians like Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, the Dregs) and Steve Lukather (Toto). There are a lot of others, but those guys are at the top of my list,” Tisdale says.

Bad Habit aims to expand its repertoire and one day record an original song, while Tisdale also hopes to continue making music, both with Bad Habit and on her own.

“I’ve been fortunate to be able to do a lot of things while keeping this as a hobby that I do in my spare time. I recorded and released a CD of original music with my band Red Handed in 1994. We recorded in a real studio (Master Sound in Virginia Beach) and financed it entirely ourselves. It was a must-do item on my bucket list,” Tisdale said.

“My wife sent me to Rock Fantasy Camp in 2008 for Father’s Day. I got to play with a bunch of famous musicians, including one of my heroes, Elliot Easton, the lead guitarist for The Cars,” he continued. “I recorded two albums of original instrumental guitar music in 1990 and 2020. Playing a larger local venue would be cool, and also recording and releasing an original song with Bad Habit.”
