Longtime SpongeBob SquarePants voice actor Tom Kenny has suggested that the popular Nickelodeon cartoon character is neurodivergent.

At Motor City Comic Con 2024 in Detroit earlier this year, Kenny recalls being approached by an autistic fan who asked him if SpongeBob was autistic. A video of Kenny sharing the anecdote was posted by ToonHive on X/Twitter on Tuesday (July 23).

SpongeBob is also an autistic character, Kenny says in the clip. It was the first time I had been asked that question, and someone who was clearly autistic came up to me and said, 'I have a question for you, Tom Kenny. Is SpongeBob autistic?'

He remembers saying, “Sure!” I said, “You know what? It’s his superpower, just like it’s your superpower.”

The audience applauds and cheers in response to his explanation.

This isn't the first time the voice actor, who has been voicing SpongeBob SquarePants since 1999, has spoken out about the character's neurodivergent nature.

In 2018 and 2020, Kenny received the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performance by a Performer in an Animated Program for his work on SpongeBob SquarePants.

He also lent his voice to the Ice King in Adventure time and its spin-off Fionna and the Cakethe narrator and mayor of The Powerpuff GirlsCarl Chryniszzswics in Johnny Bravo and Spyro of the Spyro video game series.

Last year, Kenny's wife was forced to clarify that her husband was not dating pop superstar Ariana Grande.

Grande is reportedly dating Ethan Slater, who played SpongeBob in SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical from 2017 to 2019 since summer 2023.

Jill Talley, who has been married to Kenny since 1996, said on Instagram: “Hi everyone, I am married to Tom Kenny (voice of SpongeBob SquarePants on the TV show). He is not dating Ariana Grande.”
