Minnesota Yacht Club Brings Music Festival Experience Back to Harriet Island – The Minnesota Daily

Last weekend, the Minnesota Yacht Club drew about 60,000 people for the first music festival at Harriet Island in St. Paul since 2012.

The festival featured a packed lineup with big-name headliners like Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morissette and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The inaugural festival also welcomed big local acts like Soul Asylum and Hippo Campus, as well as up-and-coming Minnesota bands like Durry, Gully Boys and Bugsy.

With festivals like Rock the Garden and Soundset closing down in recent years, the Twin Cities has seen a dearth of large music festivals. But it seems that demand is finally being met by the Minnesota Yacht Club, which is already planning to host the festival again next year.

With a beautiful view of the Mississippi River and the Wabasha Street Bridge, Harriet Island seemed like an obvious choice for a music festival of this magnitude. The panoramic view created a relaxed summer atmosphere as the shows continued late into the night.

On the festival’s opening day, Harriet Island was packed with thousands of fans before the sun went down. Gwen Stefani delivered a remarkably energetic performance, lasting over an hour, featuring her solo hits, iconic No Doubt songs and even an onstage duet with husband Blake Shelton. The night ended with headliner Alanis Morissette performing nearly the entirety of her classic 1995 album Jagged Little Pill.

Anna Adamson, 19, attended the festival with her mother specifically to see Alanis Morrissette perform, as they were able to get tickets on the day of the festival.

“She’s a huge Alanis Morissette fan, so it’s her favorite song,” Adamson said. “I grew up listening to it with her and we were definitely there for her.”

Adamson said that while the festival's programming seemed aimed at Generation X, the festival attracted a multigenerational audience.

“It really felt like a family event,” Adamson said. “You could see a lot of different generations there, which is really cool to see.”

Sam Lee and Olivia Kanzler, both 23, attended the first day of the festival together to see performances by The Head and The Heart, Gwen Stefani and Alanis Morisette.

The organization was well thought out, the music was great and the atmosphere was incredible, Lee said. The only thing we thought could be improved was the lines for food and refreshments. They were very long for a good part of the day.

The festival featured a host of local vendors including Bennetts Chop and Railhouse, Roons Savory Cones, Surly Brewing Company and more.

Unfortunately, by the time the headliners took the stage, the lines for food and drinks were very long, moving at a snail's pace. With a large festival like this, long concession lines are to be expected, but it seems that the Minnesota Yacht Club underestimated the number of vendors they needed for the weekend.

Adamson said the wait for food and drinks was a downside to the festival experience.

“I had a great night because the music was great, but the food situation was really frustrating,” Adamson said. They needed almost twice as many food vendors as they had.

Aside from the lines for food and drinks, the Minnesota Yacht Club ran smoothly for its two days. With the festival's opening weekend behind them, organizers are hoping to figure out how to make the festival even better next year.

While the festival wasn't quite perfect, it was still fun. Any Twin Cities residents who enjoy big outdoor music festivals should keep an eye out for details on next year's Minnesota Yacht Club festival.
