Mona Singh recalls her fight against ageism in Bollywood

Mona Singh spoke about how OTT platforms are changing the narrative and her experiences with ageism in the film industry. She also spoke about the struggles she faced in her 30s and the benefits digital media has brought.

In a conversation with a leading media outlet, Mona revealed that she realized that nothing positive was happening to her when she decided to take a break from television.

“It happened when I was 30. There was a break because I wasn’t doing television because I wanted to challenge myself as an actress. I was experimenting with theatre at the time. That’s when there was a lull and I asked myself: is this really happening to me? I’m not getting roles because I’m 34-35,” she said.

Mona said that this phase didn’t last long as she realised that she had a lot more to do with the rise of digital media in 2017. The kind of stories and even the storytelling has changed. It’s much bolder and more creative. There are a lot of roles that I can play. Also, the characters are not just black and white anymore and you can do shades of grey, without being judged.

The Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi star went on to say that her goals as an actress have not changed. She aspires to play roles that test her acting abilities and demand more from her.

Mona said she wants to play a cop, do action scenes and explore all genres. “When it comes to choosing projects, the script has to make me dream and move me. It has to be impactful and make me spend sleepless nights wondering how I am going to do it,” Mona said.

She also admitted to refusing and then accepting new projects because she did not want to end up on the set and then be unhappy. She said that would be unfair not only to the filmmaker but also to her.
